Batting or pillow form to stuff
Scissors or rotary cutter Cutting board
Matching thread
Sewing machine
Needle and thread for finished quilting
Iron and ironing board
Piecing Note: It
is generally suggested that fabric be washed before sewing. Wash and
press to eliminate the possibility of shrinkage and to remove sizing.
Stitching fabric pieces, leave 1/4" seam at edges. Press after sewing
each square or rectangle. White chalk is good to use for marking as
it washes off easily or can be removed with a damp sponge.

Directions:
1. Place the
front of the fabrics together, match a red 1/2" x 5 1/2" rectangle
to the top of the blue square. Stitch 1/4" from outside edge. Repeat
with a second red rectangle on the bottom side of the blue square. Press.
2. Place the front
side of a 2 1/2" x 9 1/2" rectangle on the front side of the
blue square so that it runs the length of the piece you have sewn thus
far. Stitch. Repeat with the opposite side. This will complete a red
frame around the blue square.
3. Using a blue
rectangle, match it to the top of your piece so that the front side
of the rectangle and the front of the red frame are together. Stitch.
Repeat this step at the bottom of your piece.
4. Put aside the
piece you have sewn so far for this step. Using another blue rectangle
and two red squares you will make a side bar for your piece. Stitch
a red square to one of the 3 1/2" sides of the blue rectangle. Then,
sew a second red square to the opposite end of the rectangle. Repeat
with the leftover blue rectangle and red squares so that you have 2
pieces.
5. Going back to
the piece that was set aside, attach one of the sidebars to each side
of the pillow square, continue to use a 1/4" seam. Sew final two side
bars (the longest ones) to finish the side border.
6. Refer to directions
for painting and stenciling the design.
7. Finish: Sew the
backing to the pillow leaving an opening to fill with batting or a pillow
form.
8. After filling
the pillow, stitch the opening closed.

Painting and
Stenciling Instructions:
Note: Dry brush is a technique where the paint is used with a dry brush
and most of that is wiped away by running over paper towel, so that
only a hint of paint remains on the bristles. Shading is blending in
a darker color onto a lighter one. Highlighting is blending a lighter
color onto a darker one.
1. Transfer designs
to tracing paper. Transfer the tree and star shapes to the stencil blank
and cut with craft knife or small scissors. Be sure to protect surface
when using a craft knife such as a thick magazine or cutting board.
2. Place clean cardboard
or brown paper under fabric before painting. Tape edges to keep fabric
from moving and to keep it taut when painting or stenciling.
3. Refer to directions
on label of fabric medium to mix with paints. Styrofoam egg carton pockets
are good for mixing the paint with fabric medium. To deepen colors when
painting, apply two coats drying the first coat before applying the
second. White can also be applied first, allowed to dry, and then basecoat
with suggested colors. When stenciling, white paint may show around
the edges, touch up carefully with the correct paint using a fabric
brush.
