Brush Techniques

Dry brushing: using a dry brush with very little paint to cover an area with a hint of color.

Sample of brush drying.

Double loaded brush: two paint colors on one brush. Double load by tipping one side in a light color, the other in a contrasting color. Double loading for flower petals is done by filling the top half of the brush with one color and the remainder with another color.

Stippling: using a brush with stiff bristles loaded with either one color or double loaded with two. Pounce excess paint off onto paper and then pounce brush on surface. This gives an airy look to foliage and flowers.

Directions

  1. Dry brush the area to be painted with flowers with green and the largest black bristle brush. Dry.

  1. Flowers can be placed on randomly. Fill the top half of the #8 white stubby with dark pink and the bottom half with light pink or white and press for each petal allowing the curved tip of the brush to create the petal (darker flowers). For lighter flowers reverse the position of colors on the brush; light first and dark toward the ferrule. Press one petal for bud. For turned flowers, press two or three petals and then press two or three petals just below with petals all going in the same direction rather than around in a circle.

  1. Dot half of the handle tip of a large brush in yellow paint and the other half in gold; touch to center of flower.

  1. Leaves are painted using the smallest black bristle brush. Fill with green and place tip on fabric, angle brush, press and pull up quickly to make one-stroke leaf. Keep the edge of the brush chiseled and very lightly paint stem lines green.

  1. Allow paint to dry.
