GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACRYLIC PAINTING
 "TERMS & TECHNIQUES"

GLAZE or TINT

  1. In the  instructions I use the term “Glaze” quite frequently, which is a transparent layer of color applied over a previously based or floated color.

  2. Mix desired paint color for glaze with Faux Glazing Medium, following manufacturers instructions on bottle; apply a thin coat to the area you want to glaze and while still wet soften with a dry, Dynasty Mop Brush, Series #400 or a dry, Dynasty, Series #200, Dry Brush.

  3. This will not change the color but will accent it and deepen the inner glow of the colors. Best results are achieved by applying multiple layers of thin color.

LINEWORK

  1. Thin the paint with clean water, mixed with “Easy Float”, to an ink like consistency; load a liner or scroller brush by pulling it through the paint, twisting as you go, to achieve a fine point on tip.

  2. Line the desired area, holding the brush perpendicular to the surface; the thickness of the lines will be determined by the amount of pressure applied to the brush.

BANDING

  1. Apply “SCOTCH MAGIC TAPE” along the outer edge of area you want banded.

  2. Press firmly in place to eliminate any possibility of they paint bleeding under.

  3. Apply two or three thin coats of paint, drying between each; let dry before removing tape.

NOTE: Be sure that all basecoats are thoroughly dry before applying tape over them or it will peel the basecoat paint when removed.

STARFLAKES

This is the term used for the highlight stars in the skies and I also use them for highlights over stars and on other highlighted areas, as indicated in the various instruction pages.

  1. Using a Black Gold by Dynasty, #206MSC, Mini Script Liner, 20/0 and color indicated, make a large plus sign and then make a cross over the top of it;

  2. Place a dot in the center and tiny descending dots at the end of each line.

  3. Then make half circle lines out around the center dot.

SPATTERING

  1. Using a toothbrush, dip into water, blot lightly on paper towel and then dip into full strength paint, working into bristles;

  2. Blot excess off on paper towel;

  3. Hold the brush over the project, run you thumb across bristles until you have as much spatter as desired.

  4. Spatter size is determined by amount of water in the brush.

NOTE: Test on your palette before applying to project.

DOTS

Use full strength paint and your stylus or brush handle. For descending dots, dip into paint only once. For uniform dots, dip into paint after each dot is made.

SET DOWN STROKES

I use these for tiny leaves, tiny flower petals, even some eyelashes. They can be made with any size liner or round brush.

  1. Load the bristles about ¾ of the way to the ferrule;

  2. Set the very tip if the brush down, laying the brush on it’s side and lift off.

  3. Keep re-loading the brush as needed. These can also be made with a double loaded brush.

  4. Load in one color and then tip bristles in second color
